Garden Journal: Butterbush squash

This is still my favorite squash for the home garden. Burpee's Butterbush squash produces several 1 1/2 lb. squashes on compact bushes which do not run all over the garden. They seem to be much more disease and pest resistant than other varieties. They are a fairly good keeper. Today I have one left in the cellar. The flavor of these is excellent.

On a side note I cooked and ate a buttercup squash and found that the flavor had greatly improved with age. I peeled it, cut it up and boiled it for about 20 minutes and mashed it with a spoonful of brown sugar and about the same of butter.

I have yet to make a squash pie this year since I had a nice crop of pumpkins to use. Ditto for squash muffins and flapjacks.

Burpee's Butterbush squash. Highly recommended by yours truly. It's just about time to start ordering seeds, a happy winter's activity.
